Get the kids on their bikes over the summer holiday

20 Jul 2018

Somerset Road Somerset is working in partnership with sports centres in Somerset to offer Bikeability courses during the summer holidays.

Bikeabilty, often referred to as cycling proficiency for the 21st Century, is a great way for children to gain practical skills and understanding on how to cycle safely and with confidence on today’s roads. There are six combined level 1 and 2 courses available at five locations around the county during the summer holidays, each course is run over a two day period and covers the following topics:

Level 1

Riders learn to control and master their bikes in a space away from traffic such as a playground or closed car park. At Level 1 you can:

  • prepare a bike for cycling
  • get on and off a bike without help
  • start off, pedal and stop with control
  • pedal along, use gears and avoid objects
  • look all around and behind, and control the bike
  • share space with pedestrians and other cyclists

Level 2

Takes place on local streets, giving riders a real cycling experience. At Level 2 you can:

  • prepare for on-road cycling
  • start and finish an on-road journey
  • recognise typical hazards
  • know where to ride on the road
  • pass parked vehicles and side roads

Participants must age 9 or above, be in year 5 or above, and be able to ride a bicycle. Everyone who completes the course receives a badge and a certificate in recognition of the level they have achieved.
