Horse riders

Did you know?

In England, Scotland and Wales from 2005 to 2009 there were an average of 128 accidents each year involving a ridden horse.

In Somerset over the same 5 years there were 16 accidents in total. This resulted in 1 serious and 12 slight injuries to horse riders.

Motorists and horse riders both have a right to use the road and they also share a responsibility to consider each other's needs.

When a motorist passes a horse and rider, please pass wide and slowly. Treat all horses as a potential hazard; they can be unpredictable, despite the efforts of their rider.

Refer to the Highway Code for advice on riding safely on the roads.
